TuxGuitar

TuxGuitar is a great music composing and studying program with no pretensions to being an actual DAW, although it does contain some DAW kind functions. It includes basic features such as tablature editing, score editing, triplet support and the ability to import and export Guitar Pro gp3, gp4, and gp5 PowerTab and TablEdit files and export to standart file-formats such as MIDI, Lilyond and MusicXML.

In addition, TuxGuitar can function as a basic MIDI editor using the tablature or staff interface, and as of the 1.0 release, can import and export MIDI files.

TuxGuitar allows you to compose music with the tab editor or you can write in standard notation. It has a score viewer, a multitrack display, supports triplets and has time signature management and one button tempo management. You can add effects like bends, slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs and vibrato.

TuxGuitar has almost all of Guitar Pro’s features, it is a complete Guitar Pro clone, down to the interface and menus.

Some of the best uses:

  • in a cover band –  download the tabs to the songs you are playing, listen to the parts to work through them, make any corrections or changes you feel necessary, print the parts out for everyone in the band
  • in an original band – tab out parts so they don’t get forgotten, write multiple parts to whole songs and print the parts out for everyone
  • as a guitar teacher – write out exercises for your students to practice that you can neatly print in tab or notation
  • as a lone guitarist – all of the above applies to you
